Question: Why did the Ultimate Speed Driver qualification requirement change for the 2007 Ultimate Speed Challenge?
Answer: Additional qualifications were needed for Ultimate Speed Team eligibility. As it stood, the only requirements were to pay the $200 registration fee, age, and for the driver to have participated one time in a Local or Rally Race held anywhere. It was felt that more should be required to justify participation in the premier annual All-American Race. Since the Ultimate Speed competition is particular to the Akron Hill and track specification, qualification elimination runs proved impractical to orchestrate.
It was decided that Ultimate Speed vehicles warrant premier drivers who have demonstrated qualifications of driving skills and experience appropriate to the challenges that racing Ultimate Speed cars may present. All-American Champions have demonstrated driving skills and are familiar with the Akron Hill's nuances. Their status is appropriate to the vision and effort associated with the Ultimate Speed Challenge and ensures the Derby a driver qualified to safely manage race conditions. Their eligibility to participate in the Ultimate Speed event is additionally a reward and acknowledgement of their achievement.
